Kendrick Nunn back on the market

Published by Source on September 30th, 2011

2013 Simeon star Kendrick Nunn is back on the recruiting market after decommitting from Texas A&M earlier this week. Nunn, who announced the news via Twitter, committed to the Aggies back on August 7 in what many thought was a suprise choice.

Nunn plays at Simeon with another 2013 star, Jabari Parker. College coaches from all over the country have been flooding the Simeon gym in the past weeks to watch Parker and his teammates work out, but things are going to get a lot more crazy now that Nunn is available again.

B1G / Chicago Recruiting Tidbits – Friday 9/30

Published by Source on September 30th, 2011

Every Friday we will release a list of small recruiting news “nuggets” or “tidbits” they deserve mention on this site but do not necessarily require full articles. Here is this Friday’s edition of Recruiting Tidbits:

* 2014 prospect Perry Poindexter Jr. (Indianapolis North Central) told me that Iowa is the latest school to show interest in him. Hawkeye coaches watched him work out this past week at his high school. We talked to Poindexter earlier this month after he visited Indiana University. In addition to the Hoosiers, the 6’7″ sophomore is hearing from Purdue, Michigan, Xavier, Butler, Michigan State, IUPUI and Illinois.

* Chicago-area prospect Cameron Harvey (Wheaton Academy) committed to Eastern Illinois this past weekend. His upcoming senior season at Wheaton will be his first, as he recently transferred from St. Joseph. Joe Henricksen of the Chicago Sun-Times describes Harvey as a “big-bodied 2 guard” with “improved perimeter skills” and a “more consistent jumper.” Harvey, who had originally committed to Wyoming in 2009 and reopened his recruitment last summer, is the second member of EIU’s 2012 class. He joins JUCO transfer Alex Lubsey (Tyler, TX).

DePaul Commit Profile: Jodan Price (2012)

Published by Source on September 28th, 2011

On Tuesday, Detroit product Jodan Price became the second member of the DePaul Blue Demons’ 2012 recruiting class. Price, a 6’6″ wing from Detroit Country Day, chose DePaul over Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Hofstra, Lamar, Saint Joseph’s and Western Michigan. He was also recruited and offered by Minnesota and Northwestern, but both cooled after receiving other commitments.

Price is ranked as the #133 overall prospect by Rivals and the 26th small forward in the class. His recruitment to DePaul was led by head coach Oliver Purnell, who also locked up a commitment from power forward DeJuan Marrero (Gary, IN) last month. Price committed just days after making an official visit to DePaul’s Chicago campus. His host on that visit was Donnovan Kirk, a Detroit Country Day alum currently on the Blue Demon roster.

Top 100 recruit Nolan Berry (2013) commits to Butler

Published by Source on September 27th, 2011

Butler coach Brad Stevens landed a solid prospect on Sunday in St. Louis (DeSmet) power forward Nolan Berry. The 6’8″ Berry is the first member of Butler’s 2013 recruiting class and is ranked by Rivals as the #91 overall prospect in the class.

Despite going to back-to-back National Title games, Butler recruiting has not experienced a very noticeable upgrade in terms of prospect rankings. While they have had some top 150 prospects mixed in with mostly unranked and unheralded recruits, the Bulldogs have not landed a Top 100 commitment since  Matt Howard (#91) in 2007.

At the same time, Stevens built the program into the two-time defending runner-up with the same “unheralded” players. Guys like Gordon Hayward, Shelvin Mack, Ronald Nored and Shawn Vanzant were all unranked coming out of high school. It is interesting to think about what Stevens could do with a couple of more polished prospects thrown into the mix.

Anthony Clemmons commits to Iowa

Published by Source on September 26th, 2011

With four solid players already committed to Iowa in the class of 2012, head coach Fran McCaffery is moving the program in the right direction. On Sunday the stellar class grew to five with the commitment of Lansing, MI (Sexton) point guard Anthony Clemmons.

The 6’1″ Clemmons gave his pledge to the Hawkeyes after making an official campus visit over the weekend. He was also considering Detroit, Eastern Michigan, Northern Illinois and Western Michigan. He had committed briefly to EMU earlier this summer but reopened his recruitment.

Clemmons has built a friendship with current Hawkeye and fellow Michigan-native Devyn Marble, who served as his player host for the visit. He told Rivals.com that he hopes to make it back to Iowa City the weekend of October 15th to join fellow Hawkeye commits Adam Woodbury (ranked #42 overall) and Mike Gesell (#96)  on their official visits.

As a junior at Sexton, Clemmons averaged 12 point, 4 rebounds and 4 assists per game. He plays alongside Michigan State commit Denzel Valentine (#80) and mid-major prospect Bryn Forbes.

Bronson Koenig will be a Badger

Published by Source on September 24th, 2011

Bo Ryan has already landed a commitment from the top Wisconsin state prospect in 2012, 6-7 SF Sam Dekker (#18 overall). On Saturday, he received a commitment from the top 2013 Wisconsin player when Bronson Koenig made the call for the Badgers.

Koenig, the #64 overall prospect and point guard from La Crosse (Aquinas), chose Wisconsin over North Carolina. He also held offers from a number of high major schools including Duke, Kansas, Marquette and Virginia. Earlier this month, he made it clear that Wisconsin and North Carolina were his top two and there was much speculation that it was just a matter of when (and not if) he would pledge to the Badgers.

Zach Auguste Commits to Notre Dame

Published by Source on September 23rd, 2011

Just a few weeks ago, 2012 PF Zach Auguste had cut his list of schools down to four and Notre Dame was one of the schools that did NOT make the list. That didn’t stop Mike Brey and staff from continuing to pursue Auguste (New Hampton, NH), who recently moved up to #93 in the Rivals150. Apparently, that perseverance did not go unnoticed as Auguste committed to the Fighting Irish earlier today.

Auguste set up official visits for his final four schools (Marquette, Florida, West Virginia, and Georgia Tech), but only made it to Marquette last weekend before making the commitment. He scheduled an official visit to South Bend and arrived on campus on Wednesday. Obviously, the visit left quite an impression on the prep school senior.

B1G / Chicago Recruiting Tidbits – Friday 9/23

Published by Source on September 23rd, 2011

Every Friday we will release a list of small recruiting news “nuggets” or “tidbits” they deserve mention on this site but do not necessarily require full articles. Here is this Friday’s edition of Recruiting Tidbits:

* Illinois State scored a commitment from North Chicago point guard Aaron Simpson on Wednesday afternoon. The 6-0, 170 lb Simpson is a solid prospect for the Redbirds. He has a variety of tools at point guard, being able to run the floor and facilitate, but he can also put up points. Simpson has a solid outside shot and holds the ability to get in the lane and mix it up. Several high major programs were interested in Simpson throughout his recruitment, including DePaul, Marquette, Illinois and Purdue. He is the second member of the ISU 2012 class for head coach Tim Jankovich, joining local guard prospect Anthony Beane.

Newest Husker: PG Benny Parker (2012)

Published by Source on September 22nd, 2011

Nebraska head coach Doc Sadler landed the fourth member of his 2012 class on Wednesday when Benny Parker gave him and the Huskers his verbal pledge. Parker, from Sumner Academy in Kansas City, is as pure of a point guard as there is.

The areas at which he most excels are facilitating the offense and locking down on defense. At just 5-8, Parker is going to have a major heigh disadvantage in college when it comes to driving the lane and hitting contested jumpers. But Parker will still make an immediate impact with his ability to be a true leader on the court and make things happen for his teammates.

Louisville and Kentucky Visit Gary Harris

Published by Source on September 20th, 2011

By: Eric Gardner, Purdue contributor

Late Monday, the news came through the Twitter feeds and blogs that Kentucky Head Coach John Calipari had a surprise in-home visit with Indianapolis-native Gary Harris.  This definitely is surprising but not shocking.  One thing you can say about Kentucky is they have the ability to pull off a commitment at the last second and if you have been following the Gary Harris recruitment, you know that this is way late in the game.

In the past two weeks, Gary has had not only Kentucky but also Louisville stop by for an in-home visit.  The main players to this point have been Indiana, Purdue, and Michigan State but Gary has stated that there may be other schools that can still join in his list.  Those three main schools have all already set up official visits for the next two months.  It will be interesting to see if Louisville and/or Kentucky can score a visit, as well.  Not much has been made about the Louisville visit but from all inclinations it went okay.  Now that Kentucky got a chance to sit down with the Harris family we will just have to wait and see what comes of it in the next few weeks.
