B1G / Chicago Recruiting Tidbits – Friday 10/28

Published by Source on October 28th, 2011

Every Friday we will post a list of smaller recruiting news “nuggets” or “tidbits” that deserve mention on this site but do not necessarily require full articles. Here is this Friday’s edition of Recruiting Tidbits:

* Two suburban Chicago prospects are off the board and headed to the MAC. Warren’s Darius Paul and Lake Forest Academy’s Charles Harris both committed early this week to Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, MI. According to Scott Powers, Paul (who committed on Monday) and Harris (on Sunday) were AAU teammates for Full Package this past club season. The 6’7″ Paul, who is the younger brother of current Illinois junior Brandon Paul, averaged 11.2 points and 7.2 rebounds as a junior for Warren last season. Harris (6’4″) averaged an impressive 15 points for LFA, along with seven rebounds. Both prospects are seniors and will be Broncos next season.

* Also committing on Monday was Rivals’ #116 overall prospect in the 2012 class, Javontae Hawkins. Originally from Flint, Michigan and currently playing at Huntington Prep (WV), Hawkins will play his college basketball down south for the University of South Florida Bulls. Hawkins chose USF over a number of major offers, including Michigan, Ohio State, Iowa, Minnesota and DePaul. USF head coach Stan Heath was pretty impressive in recruiting and landing Hawkins, who is a fantastic athlete and will make an immediate impact next season in the Big East.

* One of the top senior big men in the entire country made his decision Tuesday afternoon: Dewitt, NY center DaJuan Coleman has decided to stay home and play his college ball at Syracuse University. Coleman chose the Orange over Kentucky and Ohio State. The hometown school was long considered to be his favorite, though DaJuan insisted throughout his recruitment that UK and OSU were also serious contenders.

Powerade Fab 50 Preseason List

Published by Source on October 20th, 2011

ESPNHS has released its preseason Powerade Fab 50, a list of the 50 best boy’s high school basketball teams in the country. There are a number of Illinois and Indiana teams on the list, as well as plenty of teams with players committed to or being recruited by B1G and Chicago-area colleges. Here’s the highlights of the list:

1. Simeon Career Academy (Chicago, IL)

- Chicago powerhouse Simeon landed the well-deserved top spot on this year’s list. Behind outstanding junior Jabari Parker, considered by some to be the best player in the 2013 class, the Wolverines lineup features several other highly-touted prospects. Senior Steve Taylor is already committed to Marquette, while junior Kendrick Nunn recently re-opened his recruitment after making an early pledge to Texas A&M. Also joining the group is junior point guard Jaylon Tate, who transferred to Simeon from De La Salle this past summer. Tate has been hearing from most of the B1G already, plus hometown DePaul, and has already landed an offer from Northwestern.

The B1G’s Top 12* Players – Part 1

Published by Source on August 17th, 2011

The Windy City Source is profiling the top 12* players in the Big Ten Conference for the upcoming season. The reason we say “12*” is because rather than choosing the best players regardless of school, we will be taking 1 player from each team. Some players will be obvious, others not so much. And in case you forgot, Nebraska is in the conference now! Anyways – here’s the first part of four, featuring players from the “I” schools:

* Brandon Paul – Illinois junior from Gurnee, IL

Bruce Weber’s team will be experiencing a huge turnover this season with the loss of four seniors (three started), a one-and-done freshman (now an alleged criminal) and the addition of six freshman and a senior transfer. Normally teams would have a tough time recovering losing three senior leaders and a star freshman, but in Illinois’ case the turnover is for the better. The culture of the Fighting Illini program has been more of a “me first” situation. With Demetri McCamey, Mike Davis, Mike Tisdale and Jereme Richmond gone, Weber will have cleared his team of almost all of last season’s headaches in one swoop. Now the team is turned over to the underclassmen, led by junior guard Brandon “BP3″ Paul. Having been a solid contributor in his first two years, Paul (9 ppg) will take on a serious leadership position this season. Paul improved his stats across the board from his freshman to sophomore years, which can be partially attributed to an increase of minutes. It’s safe to say Weber will rely on Paul for more than 22.4 minutes a game this year. The most encouraging numbers are his FG, 3FG and FT percentages. Paul has shown that he can be a lethal shooter and is a tremendous athlete (my apologies to Carlton Fay).  Brandon poured in 20+ points three times in conference play last year, hitting 4 three-pointers on two of those occasions. As the top returning scorer, Paul will certainly need to put points on the board if the Illini want to get back to the NCAA Tournament. Paul has the ability to play the one, two, or three, which makes him a versatile asset in a guard-heavy lineup.

Along with junior DJ Richardson, sophomore Meyers Leonard, Bradley senior-transfer Sam Maniscalco and a parade of highly-ranked Chicago freshmen, the Illini will have a fresh look that should have fans feeling good about the future. (more…)
