Stanford Robinson (2013 SG) commits to Indiana

Published by Source on May 16th, 2012

Tom Crean has done a fantastic job landing top talent from within the Indiana state lines and now his recruiting success has reached beyond the heartland to the DMV. 2013 shooting guard Stanford Robinson (Paul VI – Fairfax, Virginia) made the decision to become a Hoosier on Wednesday, announcing it via his personal twitter account. He had visited the Bloomington campus the previous weekend and upon returning to the Virginia had set Friday as his decision day. Apparently he couldn’t wait to announce the news and IU’s 2013 class has grown to four prospects. Robinson chose the Hoosiers over Maryland, Rutgers, Texas and Villanova.

Robinson is a talented scorer who really only began mentioning Indiana this spring AAU season. He plays for Team Takeover out of Washington DC, alongside fellow 2013 IU target BeeJay Anya (Dematha Catholic). Tom Crean has had plenty of success in the area since arriving at Indiana, already landing current Hoosiers Maurice Creek and Victor Oladipo. The recent hiring of Towson assistant Kenny Johnson also played a huge role in this recruitment, as Johnson was a former Team Takeover/Paul VI coach that has long-lasting relationships with both Robinson and Anya. Robinson actually credits Johnson as being the reason he transferred to Paul VI High School in the first place.

Luke Fischer commits to Indiana

Published by Source on January 1st, 2012

Indiana sent out 2011 in style by upsetting #2 Ohio State Saturday night in Assembly Hall 74-70. The win was the second big time upset in Bloomington this year, as the Hoosiers had already upset then #1 Kentucky back on December 10th.

The upset is already paying recruiting dividends, as the Hoosiers landed a commitment this morning from Luke Fischer (2013, Germantown WI). The big man from Wisconsin becomes the third member of Tom Crean’s 2013 class, which already features Indianapolis prospects Collin Hartman and Devin Davis Jr. We will have a much more in depth profile on Fischer later this evening. Rivals ranks Fischer as the #140 overall prospect in the 2013 class, about the same place they ranked sophomore Hoosiers Victor Oladipo and Will Sheehey in 2010.

With Saturday’s win, the Hoosiers became the first team since 2009-10 to beat a #1 and #2 team in the same season (both Louisville and and Tennessee did it that season). Even more impressive, they became the first team to accomplish that feat in the same month since Kansas did it in the 2008 Final Four.

New Fighting Irish commit: VJ Beachem (2013)

Published by Source on October 17th, 2011

VJ Beachem (New Haven, Indiana) became the first member of Mike Brey’s 2013 recruiting class when he made the call for Notre Dame a couple weeks ago. The 4-star prospect is ranked #72 overall by Rivals, and the #13 small forward in the class. Beachem had additional offers from Purdue, Iowa, Minnesota and Butler, but was being recruited be a number of other basketball powers, most notably Indiana, Michigan and Michigan State.

Beachem is a long and athletic wing who averaged 19 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists as a sophomore last season. His previous school, Fort Wayne Harding, closed down after last year and Beachem is now in his first year at New Haven.

Once merely a perimeter threat, Beachem has added several new dimensions to his game. He had a fantastic summer playing for the Eric Gordon All-Stars AAU squad, alongside two future Hoosiers (Collin Hartman and Devin Davis), one Boilermaker (Basil Smotherman) and one Wolverine (Zak Irvin). In July, Beachem told Jeff Rabjohns of Rivals.com that he was often hearing it from his teammates to join them at the next level.

Hoosier Hysteria Unofficial Guest List

Published by Source on October 13th, 2011

Plenty of prospects, some already committed to IU but most undecided, will be making their way to Bloomington on Saturday Oct. 15th for the annual Hoosier Hysteria “midnight madness” event. Normally, the festivities take place on Friday night, but with an away football game that weekend the event was moved to Saturday evening. Head coach Tom Crean has put together an impressive group of prospects for the weekend, including a large contingent from the state of Kentucky.

This move also coincides with the official visit of 2012 star Gary Harris (Fishers, IN) who will be making his official visit that Saturday. Normally, official visits get started on Friday but since Harris is a football player he will be busy that night.

Notably missing are Indiana’s two 2014 verbals James Blackmon Jr and Trey Lyles, who will be attending the USA Basketball Mini Camp in Colorado for the weekend. 2013 target BeeJay Anya has also been invited to the camp. 2014 prospect Jaquan Lyle (Evansville Bosse) considered attending, but as of Thursday night he is not planning on it. It is possible he will head up to Merrillville, IN for the Pangos All-Midwest camp instead.

UPDATE: These are guests of a different type, but IU Athletics has announced that college basketball TV broadcaster Bill Raftery will be at Assembly Hall as an announcer, and former Hoosiers/current NBA players Eric Gordon and DJ White will be in attendance.

VJ Beachem interested in Indiana, others

Published by Source on July 20th, 2011
He does not yet hold an offer from Indiana, but 2013 forward V.J. Beachem (Fort Wayne Harding) hopes to get one soon. “I’d love to get an offer from Indiana,” Beachem said at the adidas Invitational in Indianapolis. He also stated that he was “very interested” in Indiana. The rising junior has offers from in-state Purdue and Butler so far, as well as interest from Indiana, Notre Dame, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State and others.

Beachem is played with the Eric Gordon All-Stars this summer alongside Indiana commits Devin Davis and Collin Hartman. They also play with Purdue commit Basil Smotherman and high-major prospect Zak Irvin. Beachem noted that he has thought about playing with all of those guys on the next level, saying that playing with Hartman and Davis works now so it should work in college, too.

Purdue has been recruiting Beachem for the longest time and was the first program to offer him. He has also been on a visit recently to Michigan, one which he enjoyed very much. His AAU teammate Zak Irvin has been reported to be very high on the Wolverines right now.
