Nebraska gets JUCO point guard

Published by Source on April 17th, 2012

New head coach Tim Miles has landed his first Nebraska commitment since taking over the position back in March. Steward County CC (KS) point guard Deverell Biggs made his verbal pledge to the Huskers Sunday, choosing them over Oklahoma State, Southern Miss and Utah State.

Biggs is a Nebraska-native that played his prep ball at Omaha Central. He returns to his home state as a junior ready to make an immediate impact on the new look Cornhuskers.

Miles’ 2012 class is now three men deep, as Biggs joins Kansas City high school prospects Shavon Shields and Benny Parker. Before previous head coach Doc Sadler was fired, he had signed three other JUCO prospects. All three of those players have been released from their commitments to the University.

Getting the first commitment is crucial for any new head coach. It will be interesting to see if any of Miles’ recruits from Colorado State will make the switch over to Nebraska, as he still has several available scholarships. CSU has signed letters from Texas SG Jordan Mason and Chicago PG Jermaine Morgan (Whitney Young). According to HuskerOnline.com, Morgan wants out of his letter to CSU and has expressed interest in following Miles to Lincoln.

Nebraska hires Colorado States’ Miles

Published by Source on March 25th, 2012

Nebraska athletic director Tom Osbourne has found the next Huskers men’s basketball coach: Colorado State’s Tim Miles. The 45-year old Miles comes to Lincoln to replace fired head coach Doc Sadler and will lead the Huskers into their second season of B1G competition. The first season was less than impressive, as the Huskers finished 11th out of 12 teams and lost in the first round of the conference tournament.

Miles appeared in his first career NCAA Tournament this past season, leading the Colorado State Rams to the 11-seed in the West Regional. It was the program’s first appearance since in nine years. Though the Rams fell to Murray State in their first game, the season was quite a success and launched Miles to his next career destination: Big Ten head coach.

In his five years in Fort Collins, Miles coached the Rams to an overall 71-88 (28-50) record. But those numbers would look a lot better when you take out a rough first two years in which Miles was forced to rebuild a team with just two returning players. Over the last three years Miles has proved his coaching abilities, leading the Rams to a 55-41 record and three straight postseason appearances (CBI in 2010, NIT in 2011 and NCAA in 2012).

Revisiting My Preseason Predictions

Published by Source on March 21st, 2012

With the regular season finished and postseason tournaments in full swing, it is time to take a look back at the predictions I posted the day before this college basketball season began. I went game-by-game to predict wins and losses, tallied them up and listed the teams from 1-12. Needless to say, I did not do that well.

The first thing that jumps out is that the B1G really beat up on each other in conference play, with a lot of teams at the top of the standings losing to teams at the bottom. No team dominated the season the way that I (and many others) expected Ohio State to do.

It was not all bad, though, as I was pretty spot on with my non-conference records. For most teams, I only missed 2 or 3 non-conference games (I missed 4 for Penn State, but was perfect for Minnesota and only missed 1 each for Michigan State, Northwestern, Purdue and Wisconsin). Below, you will see a couple different lists. The first is the side-by-side of my predicted conference standings and the actual conference standings. Next, you will see a team-by-team breakdown of the records I predicted so that you can see how wrong/right I was. NOTE: I do not include conference tournament games, as those would have been impossible to predict before the season. NOTE 2: 3-way tie in actual B1G standings, but I listed the 3 teams in the order they were seeded in the conference tournament.

PREDICTED:                       ACTUAL:

1 – Ohio State                  T-1 – Michigan State

2 – Michigan                   T-1 – Michigan

3 – Wisconsin                 T-1 – Ohio State

Bruce Weber, Doc Sadler both fired

Published by Source on March 9th, 2012

Two Big Ten head coaches were relieved of their duties on Friday, both after losing in the first round of the conference tournament on Thursday. Illinois has cut ties with Bruce Weber, the Illini head coach for the past nine seasons. Several hours later, Nebraska athletic director Tom Osbourne announced the firing of Cornhusker men’s basketball coach Doc Sadler after six seasons in Lincoln.

There was much speculation throughout the last two months that Weber would not be retained by Illinois and those suspicions became reality Friday morning. Back in February, following a disappointing home loss to Purdue, Weber admitted that he had coached “not to lose” all season and apologized to a lot of people in what seemed to be a sign that his tenure was nearing its end. The Illini started the season out hot, jumping out to a 10-0 record and eventually finding themselves in first place in the conference at 15-3 (4-1). Then the losses started happening as the Illini finished the season losing 12 of their final 14 games.

Nebraska lands JUCO big man

Published by Source on October 3rd, 2011

Head coach Doc Sadler has landed his third JUCO commitment for the Nebraska class of 2012 in big man Fahro Alihodzic. The 6’9″ Alihodzic plays at Southeastern CC in Burlington, Iowa and is the fifth overall member of the Huskers class.

Originally from Bosnia, Alihodzic played high school ball at St. Francis de Sales in Toledo, Ohio and committed to play at Fordham University. He started 14 times as a freshman in 2009-2010 and appeared in every game for the Rams, averaging 4.5 points and 4.0 rebounds in 22.3 minutes per game. He shot 41% from the field and only averaged 1.4 turnovers per game.

B1G / Chicago Recruiting Tidbits – Friday 9/23

Published by Source on September 23rd, 2011

Every Friday we will release a list of small recruiting news “nuggets” or “tidbits” they deserve mention on this site but do not necessarily require full articles. Here is this Friday’s edition of Recruiting Tidbits:

* Illinois State scored a commitment from North Chicago point guard Aaron Simpson on Wednesday afternoon. The 6-0, 170 lb Simpson is a solid prospect for the Redbirds. He has a variety of tools at point guard, being able to run the floor and facilitate, but he can also put up points. Simpson has a solid outside shot and holds the ability to get in the lane and mix it up. Several high major programs were interested in Simpson throughout his recruitment, including DePaul, Marquette, Illinois and Purdue. He is the second member of the ISU 2012 class for head coach Tim Jankovich, joining local guard prospect Anthony Beane.

Newest Husker: PG Benny Parker (2012)

Published by Source on September 22nd, 2011

Nebraska head coach Doc Sadler landed the fourth member of his 2012 class on Wednesday when Benny Parker gave him and the Huskers his verbal pledge. Parker, from Sumner Academy in Kansas City, is as pure of a point guard as there is.

The areas at which he most excels are facilitating the offense and locking down on defense. At just 5-8, Parker is going to have a major heigh disadvantage in college when it comes to driving the lane and hitting contested jumpers. But Parker will still make an immediate impact with his ability to be a true leader on the court and make things happen for his teammates.
