Zeller and Watford returning to Indiana

Published by Source on April 10th, 2012

Two key pieces to Indiana’s success this past season will be back again next year to help the Hoosiers make a run at the National Title. Freshman big man Cody Zeller and junior wing Christian Watford announced Tuesday that they will both be back for the 2012-13 season to play for Tom Crean and the Hoosiers.

Zeller, the B1G co-Freshman of the Year and honorable mention AP All-American, had a brilliant season in which his post presence changed the entire complexion of the team on both sides of the court. The star forward averaged 15.6 points and 6.6 rebounds on a team that went to its first Sweet 16 since 2002. Zeller was the cornerstone of the team’s turn-around and will continue to have a major impact on their success moving forward. Many NBA experts projected Cody as a lottery pick, many placing him in the top-10.

All-American Championship Rosters Announced

Published by Source on March 1st, 2012

Earlier today, Scout.com’s Evan Daniels posted the rosters for the upcoming All-American Championship. The event, which takes place Sunday April 1st at the Lakefront Arena in New Orleans, features four teams of prep players from across the country. Players are divided onto the four teams (East, West, North and South) and two games are played (East-West at 3pm EST and North-South afterwards). For the second year in a row, the event is held in the same city and during the same weekend as the NCAA Final Four (March 31-April 2 at the Superdome in NOLA).

High school recruits are allowed participate in two sanctioned All-Star events per year. Several of the players in this event were ineligible for the McDonald’s All-American game, while others were simply not chosen.

The B1G is well-represented, with the North roster being comprised entirely of future B1G players and one more headed to Notre Dame. What is interesting about this event is that it is open to both seniors and juniors (7 of the 38 players are in the class of 2013). The full rosters follow the jump below, with all locally-notable prospects in BOLD.

Future B1G Players hit BIG shots

Published by Source on March 1st, 2012

If you have watched SportsCenter at all since Tuesday night, you have no doubt seen the video of future Michigan State Spartan Gary Harris hitting a buzzer-beating game winner from near half court. The senior star at Hamilton Southeastern banked in an unbelievable shot from about 35 feet to advance the Royals to the second round of the state playoffs. The losing team, Indianapolis North Central, featured two future B1G players, as well, with Purdue-bound Ronnie Johnson and future Iowa Hawkeye Patrick Ingram (both seniors). Harris finished the game with 35 points and the play of the game, which has been featured as SportsCenter’s #1 Top Play.

But Harris wasn’t the only player to hit a game-winner in Indiana sectionals that night. Future Indiana Hoosier Jeremy Hollowell advanced his Lawrence Central team into the second round with a smooth lay-up in the final seconds of a tie game against Arsenal Tech. While it wasn’t a half-court bank shot, Hollowell made an incredibly impressive play by weaving through defenders into the lane and hitting the shot over Tech’s sophomore sensation Trey Lyles (another future Hoosier). Time expired and Hollowell’s teammates rushed the court in what turned out to be quite an exciting game. What made this shot more amazing is that the game was being played at Arsenal Tech High School. Both videos are linked below, after the jump:

A signature win for Indiana

Published by Source on December 10th, 2011

The Build-up

Despite being 8-0 and winning each game by more than 10 points, Indiana was not favored to win today at Assembly Hall. In fact, most people outside of Indiana did not even really think twice about Indiana’s chance to win today. The reason? The top-ranked, undefeated and uber-talented rival Kentucky Wildcats were coming to town.

John Calipari’s bunch was fresh off of a win over previously top-ranked North Carolina that vaulted them up to that number 1 spot. In addition to that, Indiana hadn’t beaten UK since 2007. But none of that matter to Tom Crean and the Indiana Hoosiers. Because of that, their program has been changed forever.

Most Hoosier fans will tell you that this year’s IU team has been playing better than the non-ranking given to them by national media. They have been receiving votes in each poll but had yet to crack the Top 25. Indiana’s first 8 wins did not exactly come against top competition, though they had won 2 true road games (Evanston and NC State) and a tough home win over Butler. There was a lot to be excited about in Bloomington and with an entire week to prepare for this game, Hoosier Nation was in heavy anticipation for their date with Number One.

Kentucky came into Saturday’s game with 8 wins of their own, coming against the likes of UNC, Kansas and St. Johns, but had yet to play a true road game. With a young team, a road trip to a wild environment like Assembly Hall is a real challenge.

Hoosier Hysteria Unofficial Guest List

Published by Source on October 13th, 2011

Plenty of prospects, some already committed to IU but most undecided, will be making their way to Bloomington on Saturday Oct. 15th for the annual Hoosier Hysteria “midnight madness” event. Normally, the festivities take place on Friday night, but with an away football game that weekend the event was moved to Saturday evening. Head coach Tom Crean has put together an impressive group of prospects for the weekend, including a large contingent from the state of Kentucky.

This move also coincides with the official visit of 2012 star Gary Harris (Fishers, IN) who will be making his official visit that Saturday. Normally, official visits get started on Friday but since Harris is a football player he will be busy that night.

Notably missing are Indiana’s two 2014 verbals James Blackmon Jr and Trey Lyles, who will be attending the USA Basketball Mini Camp in Colorado for the weekend. 2013 target BeeJay Anya has also been invited to the camp. 2014 prospect Jaquan Lyle (Evansville Bosse) considered attending, but as of Thursday night he is not planning on it. It is possible he will head up to Merrillville, IN for the Pangos All-Midwest camp instead.

UPDATE: These are guests of a different type, but IU Athletics has announced that college basketball TV broadcaster Bill Raftery will be at Assembly Hall as an announcer, and former Hoosiers/current NBA players Eric Gordon and DJ White will be in attendance.
