Zeller and Watford returning to Indiana

Published by Source on April 10th, 2012

Two key pieces to Indiana’s success this past season will be back again next year to help the Hoosiers make a run at the National Title. Freshman big man Cody Zeller and junior wing Christian Watford announced Tuesday that they will both be back for the 2012-13 season to play for Tom Crean and the Hoosiers.

Zeller, the B1G co-Freshman of the Year and honorable mention AP All-American, had a brilliant season in which his post presence changed the entire complexion of the team on both sides of the court. The star forward averaged 15.6 points and 6.6 rebounds on a team that went to its first Sweet 16 since 2002. Zeller was the cornerstone of the team’s turn-around and will continue to have a major impact on their success moving forward. Many NBA experts projected Cody as a lottery pick, many placing him in the top-10.

McDonald’s All-American Game 2012 RECAP

Published by Source on March 29th, 2012

Another successful McDonald’s All-American event in Chicago is in the books. Twenty-four of the nation’s best high school teammates engaged in an exciting all-star game in front of a packed house at the United Center. While the field did not include any players from Chicago high schools, there were two future B1G players on the court facing off against each other. Future Indiana Hoosier Kevin “Yogi” Ferrell played point guard for the West and future Michigan State Spartan Gary Harris was on the East squad – they played on separate teams even though both players are from Indianapolis. Ferrell’s West team controlled most of the game and, after the East pulled within two points late in the second half, were able to hold on and win it 106-102.

Harris was among the starters for the East squad, but finished with just two points in a game that was dominated offensively be a select group of players. Harris finished with 2 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Kentucky-bound Alex Poythress had 19 points and future UCLA Bruin Kyle Anderson nearly put up a triple-double with 13 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists. Anderson was the most impressive East player in my opinion. He is just so smooth on the court and you can tell that the game comes naturally to him. As a 6’8″ point guard, Anderson will be a match-up nightmare next season and has the ability to turn around the UCLA program on his own. Poythress was pretty impressive on offense, as well, regularly slicing through the albeit lackadaisical defense and getting to the bucket. He did commit six fouls in the game, which is somewhat alarming as it was an all-star game.

All-American Championship Rosters Announced

Published by Source on March 1st, 2012

Earlier today, Scout.com’s Evan Daniels posted the rosters for the upcoming All-American Championship. The event, which takes place Sunday April 1st at the Lakefront Arena in New Orleans, features four teams of prep players from across the country. Players are divided onto the four teams (East, West, North and South) and two games are played (East-West at 3pm EST and North-South afterwards). For the second year in a row, the event is held in the same city and during the same weekend as the NCAA Final Four (March 31-April 2 at the Superdome in NOLA).

High school recruits are allowed participate in two sanctioned All-Star events per year. Several of the players in this event were ineligible for the McDonald’s All-American game, while others were simply not chosen.

The B1G is well-represented, with the North roster being comprised entirely of future B1G players and one more headed to Notre Dame. What is interesting about this event is that it is open to both seniors and juniors (7 of the 38 players are in the class of 2013). The full rosters follow the jump below, with all locally-notable prospects in BOLD.

Harris and Ferrell make McDonald’s Rosters

Published by Source on February 9th, 2012

Two current B1G commitments have been named to the prestigious McDonald’s All-American game, being held March 28th at the United Center in Chicago. Michigan State-bound shooting guard Gary Harris will play on the East team while point guard and Indiana verbal Kevin “Yogi” Ferrell will play for the West. Ferrell is out of state title contender Park Tudor School in Indianapolis and Harris plays at Hamilton Southeastern High School in nearby Fishers, Indiana.

Despite the game being in Chicago, these are the only two B1G players to participate in the game. Michigan’s top commitment Mitch McGary, a Chesterton, Indiana native, is ineligible for the game because he is a 5th-year prep student. In fact, the only other players from B1G country are North Carolina-bound Marcus Paige (Marion, Iowa) and still undecided Amile Jefferson (Philadelphia, PA).

Hoosier Hysteria Unofficial Guest List

Published by Source on October 13th, 2011

Plenty of prospects, some already committed to IU but most undecided, will be making their way to Bloomington on Saturday Oct. 15th for the annual Hoosier Hysteria “midnight madness” event. Normally, the festivities take place on Friday night, but with an away football game that weekend the event was moved to Saturday evening. Head coach Tom Crean has put together an impressive group of prospects for the weekend, including a large contingent from the state of Kentucky.

This move also coincides with the official visit of 2012 star Gary Harris (Fishers, IN) who will be making his official visit that Saturday. Normally, official visits get started on Friday but since Harris is a football player he will be busy that night.

Notably missing are Indiana’s two 2014 verbals James Blackmon Jr and Trey Lyles, who will be attending the USA Basketball Mini Camp in Colorado for the weekend. 2013 target BeeJay Anya has also been invited to the camp. 2014 prospect Jaquan Lyle (Evansville Bosse) considered attending, but as of Thursday night he is not planning on it. It is possible he will head up to Merrillville, IN for the Pangos All-Midwest camp instead.

UPDATE: These are guests of a different type, but IU Athletics has announced that college basketball TV broadcaster Bill Raftery will be at Assembly Hall as an announcer, and former Hoosiers/current NBA players Eric Gordon and DJ White will be in attendance.
