Transfer rundown: 3 guys have new homes

Published by Source on May 12th, 2012

Several players have announced their plans to transfer since the season came to a close, and in the past week three of those guys have made their decisions. We are a bit late with the first two guys, but it was made official today that former Notre Dame guard and Northbrook, IL-native Alex Dragicevich is headed to Boston College.

- Former Illini Crandall Head will follow his old assistant coach Jerrance Howard to SMU. New Mustangs coach Larry Brown is looking to turn the program around and brought in Howard to help recruit. Head is the younger brother of Illinois star Luther Head and a native of Richton Park, Illinois. Though he was highly-touted out of high school, Head never really found his place in Champaign and appeared in just 9 games last season. He will sit out the upcoming season per NCAA rules and have two seasons of eligibility remaining after that.

- Once a top high school prospect, Jordan Sibert is now leaving the Ohio State Buckeyes for the Dayton Flyers of the Atlantic 10 Conference. Sibert averaged just 3.0 points per game as a sophomore and will head to Dayton with two seasons of eligibility remaining. Sibert was a part of Thad Matta’s blockbuster 2010 recruiting class, alongside Jared Sullinger, Aaron Craft and DeShaun Thomas. Also in that class was JD Weatherspoon, who announced his plans to transfer with Sibert but has yet to find his next destination.

- As mentioned above, Notre Dame sharp-shooter Alex Dragicevich is headed to the East Coast. The Glenbrook North High School graduate will also have two years of eligibility remaining after sitting out next season with the Eagles. Dragicevich chose BC over hometown Loyola (Chicago). He averaged 6.6 points in 20.9 minutes for the Irish last season but decided to transfer because he saw himself getting less minutes in the future.

Nebraska gets JUCO point guard

Published by Source on April 17th, 2012

New head coach Tim Miles has landed his first Nebraska commitment since taking over the position back in March. Steward County CC (KS) point guard Deverell Biggs made his verbal pledge to the Huskers Sunday, choosing them over Oklahoma State, Southern Miss and Utah State.

Biggs is a Nebraska-native that played his prep ball at Omaha Central. He returns to his home state as a junior ready to make an immediate impact on the new look Cornhuskers.

Miles’ 2012 class is now three men deep, as Biggs joins Kansas City high school prospects Shavon Shields and Benny Parker. Before previous head coach Doc Sadler was fired, he had signed three other JUCO prospects. All three of those players have been released from their commitments to the University.

Getting the first commitment is crucial for any new head coach. It will be interesting to see if any of Miles’ recruits from Colorado State will make the switch over to Nebraska, as he still has several available scholarships. CSU has signed letters from Texas SG Jordan Mason and Chicago PG Jermaine Morgan (Whitney Young). According to HuskerOnline.com, Morgan wants out of his letter to CSU and has expressed interest in following Miles to Lincoln.

Jabari Parker is Mr. Basketball

Published by Source on March 25th, 2012

For the first time in the award’s thirty-two year history, the Illinois Mr. Basketball honor is going to a high school junior: Simeon Career Academy’s Jabari Parker. Rated as the #2 overall prospect in the 2013 class by Rivals, Parker has emerged as a national star and one of the most highly sought-after prospects in the nation. In what was somewhat of a down year in Illinois (in terms of nationally recognized high school players), Parker was dominate and helped lead his stacked Simeon team to an undefeated season and state title – their second straight.

Jabari becomes the fourth Mr. Basketball award winner from Simeon, and the first since current Chicago Bulls star Derrick Rose won it in 2007. Becoming the first junior winner ever, Parker will surely be the favorite to win it next year and be the state’s first ever 2-time winner.

Parker is being recruited by just about every notable college program in the country and the upcoming AAU season will be a recruiting frenzy. There are a ton of star prospects in Illinois, with Parker and Jahlil Okafor (2014) leading the way.

Crandall Head leaving Illinois

Published by Source on December 27th, 2011

Illinois sophomore guard Crandall Head announced Tuesday that he had withdrawn from the University and will seek a transfer. Head, the younger brother of former Illinois star and NBA guard Luther Head, told IlliniHQ’s Paul Klee that the decision came down to just needing a fresh start. “I still love the players and the coaches,” he said. “It’s just not the right place for me.”

Head is a product of Rich South High School in Richton Park, IL and came to the Illini as the #84 overall prospect in the 2010 Rivals150. Head coach Bruce Weber’s 2010 class was a good one, featuring Head, current sophomore big man Meyers Leonard (#31 overall) and former wing Jereme Richmond (#35). Richmond left after last season and went undrafted, so Head’s departure leaves Leonard as the only remaining verbal commitment from that class.

Because of the timing of his departure, Head will be eligible next season as a mid-year transfer and will be able to play at the start of the second semester. The 6’5″ guard will be going through the recruiting process a second time now, and the Windy City Source will provide any and all updates regarding his future destination.

Wayne Blackshear will miss season at Louisville

Published by Source on October 31st, 2011

Morgan Park star and current Louisville freshman Wayne Blackshear will miss the entire upcoming season due to a shoulder injury suffered in practice. According to this release from the University, an MRI revealed that Blackshear has a torn labrum which requires four months of recovery.

The Cardinals are pretty set at the wing positions, with veterans like Mike Marra and Rakeem Buckles and fellow freshman Chane Behanan and Angel Nunez. However, Blackshear certainly would have gotten a share of the minutes in this year and it is a tough blow for him having such a big setback right away.

Blackshear was a star at Morgan Park and received McDonald’s All-American honors after his senior year. He was the second highest rated Chicago prospect in the class of 2011 behind Perspectives big man Anthony Davis. He averaged 32.6 points, 14.6 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 3.7 steals in his final year with the Mustangs.

B1G / Chicago Recruiting Tidbits – Friday 10/28

Published by Source on October 28th, 2011

Every Friday we will post a list of smaller recruiting news “nuggets” or “tidbits” that deserve mention on this site but do not necessarily require full articles. Here is this Friday’s edition of Recruiting Tidbits:

* Two suburban Chicago prospects are off the board and headed to the MAC. Warren’s Darius Paul and Lake Forest Academy’s Charles Harris both committed early this week to Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, MI. According to Scott Powers, Paul (who committed on Monday) and Harris (on Sunday) were AAU teammates for Full Package this past club season. The 6’7″ Paul, who is the younger brother of current Illinois junior Brandon Paul, averaged 11.2 points and 7.2 rebounds as a junior for Warren last season. Harris (6’4″) averaged an impressive 15 points for LFA, along with seven rebounds. Both prospects are seniors and will be Broncos next season.

* Also committing on Monday was Rivals’ #116 overall prospect in the 2012 class, Javontae Hawkins. Originally from Flint, Michigan and currently playing at Huntington Prep (WV), Hawkins will play his college basketball down south for the University of South Florida Bulls. Hawkins chose USF over a number of major offers, including Michigan, Ohio State, Iowa, Minnesota and DePaul. USF head coach Stan Heath was pretty impressive in recruiting and landing Hawkins, who is a fantastic athlete and will make an immediate impact next season in the Big East.

* One of the top senior big men in the entire country made his decision Tuesday afternoon: Dewitt, NY center DaJuan Coleman has decided to stay home and play his college ball at Syracuse University. Coleman chose the Orange over Kentucky and Ohio State. The hometown school was long considered to be his favorite, though DaJuan insisted throughout his recruitment that UK and OSU were also serious contenders.
