The 2012 NCAA Bracket is out!

Published by Source on March 12th, 2012

Congrats to all 68 teams that were fortunate enough to have their name called tonight! Six teams from the B1G received spots in the field, as well as local Big East teams Marquette and Notre Dame. Below, you will find a breakdown of who is playing who, where they are playing, and what day the game is on.

UPDATE: Times/broadcasts have been added at the end of each game description.

Michigan State – The Spartans got the 4th 1-seed in this year’s field after beating the Ohio State Buckeyes in this afternoon’s conference title game. Tom Izzo leads his Michigan State squad into the NCAA Tournament for the 15th straight season and this is the 4th time that they have been a 1-seed in that span. This year, the Spartans sit atop the West Region and will face NEC Champion LIU-Brookyln in the first round (Columbis, OH). A first round win will result in a match-up with either Memphis or Saint Louis over the weekend. [9:20pm/8:20cst on TBS]

Ohio State – Despite losing in the conference title game, the Buckeyes were given a 2-seed in this year’s East Regional (Syracuse is the 1). They will face off with 15-seed MAAC winner Loyola (MD) in the first round and would face either 7-seed Gonzaga or 10-seed West Virginia after that. Those games will be played in Pittsburgh. This is the 6th NCAA berth in head coach Thad Matta’s 8 seasons in Columbus and the 3rd time the Buckeyes have been a 2-seed in that time. They were also a top seed twice, including last season. It’s that time of year where the post-season high school showcase events start releasing their rosters. Yesterday, we brought you the All-American Challenge at the Final Four, plus the McDonald’s All-American teams have already been announced. Today we have the rosters for the 2012 Derby Festival Classic, which will feature three future Hoosiers and a future Badger on the same team. Playing for the White Team are: Jeremy Hollowell, Ron Patterson, Hanner Mosquera-Perea and Sam Dekker. The guys will face off against the Black Team at Freedom Hall in Louisville, KY on April 6th. For the full rosters and more information, including ticket info, check out Inside The Hall (<– direct link).

All-American Championship Rosters Announced

Published by Source on March 1st, 2012

Earlier today, Scout.com’s Evan Daniels posted the rosters for the upcoming All-American Championship. The event, which takes place Sunday April 1st at the Lakefront Arena in New Orleans, features four teams of prep players from across the country. Players are divided onto the four teams (East, West, North and South) and two games are played (East-West at 3pm EST and North-South afterwards). For the second year in a row, the event is held in the same city and during the same weekend as the NCAA Final Four (March 31-April 2 at the Superdome in NOLA).

High school recruits are allowed participate in two sanctioned All-Star events per year. Several of the players in this event were ineligible for the McDonald’s All-American game, while others were simply not chosen.

The B1G is well-represented, with the North roster being comprised entirely of future B1G players and one more headed to Notre Dame. What is interesting about this event is that it is open to both seniors and juniors (7 of the 38 players are in the class of 2013). The full rosters follow the jump below, with all locally-notable prospects in BOLD.

Future B1G Players hit BIG shots

Published by Source on March 1st, 2012

If you have watched SportsCenter at all since Tuesday night, you have no doubt seen the video of future Michigan State Spartan Gary Harris hitting a buzzer-beating game winner from near half court. The senior star at Hamilton Southeastern banked in an unbelievable shot from about 35 feet to advance the Royals to the second round of the state playoffs. The losing team, Indianapolis North Central, featured two future B1G players, as well, with Purdue-bound Ronnie Johnson and future Iowa Hawkeye Patrick Ingram (both seniors). Harris finished the game with 35 points and the play of the game, which has been featured as SportsCenter’s #1 Top Play.

But Harris wasn’t the only player to hit a game-winner in Indiana sectionals that night. Future Indiana Hoosier Jeremy Hollowell advanced his Lawrence Central team into the second round with a smooth lay-up in the final seconds of a tie game against Arsenal Tech. While it wasn’t a half-court bank shot, Hollowell made an incredibly impressive play by weaving through defenders into the lane and hitting the shot over Tech’s sophomore sensation Trey Lyles (another future Hoosier). Time expired and Hollowell’s teammates rushed the court in what turned out to be quite an exciting game. What made this shot more amazing is that the game was being played at Arsenal Tech High School. Both videos are linked below, after the jump:

Across the state of Indiana, a number of B1G and local committed prospects will be looking to advance their high school teams through sectionals. Harris and Ferrell make McDonald’s Rosters

Published by Source on February 9th, 2012

Two current B1G commitments have been named to the prestigious McDonald’s All-American game, being held March 28th at the United Center in Chicago. Michigan State-bound shooting guard Gary Harris will play on the East team while point guard and Indiana verbal Kevin “Yogi” Ferrell will play for the West. Ferrell is out of state title contender Park Tudor School in Indianapolis and Harris plays at Hamilton Southeastern High School in nearby Fishers, Indiana.

Despite the game being in Chicago, these are the only two B1G players to participate in the game. Michigan’s top commitment Mitch McGary, a Chesterton, Indiana native, is ineligible for the game because he is a 5th-year prep student. In fact, the only other players from B1G country are North Carolina-bound Marcus Paige (Marion, Iowa) and still undecided Amile Jefferson (Philadelphia, PA).
